Join us at the Association for Bright Children, Peel chapter's
Family Picnic.
This year our picnic will be held at Belfountain Conservation Area,
located in Caledon and part of the Credit Valley Conservation area. For
hikers, a short trail loops around the pond, while the Trimble Trail, a
side trail of the Bruce Trail, stretches 3 km downstream with lookouts
on the Niagara Escarpment. Charles W. Mack, the inventor of the
cushion-back rubber-stamp, purchased the land in 1908 and put stone
masons to work on ideas he acquired while travelling. The waterfall is
a miniature Niagara Falls. The cave is modelled after those of
Yellowstone. The bell-shaped fountain was built to honour the village.
From 1840- 1870 the area was mined for brownstone. This stone was used
in the construction of the provincial parliament buildings in Toronto.
The Trimble Trail follows an old tramway used to carry the stone from
the valley to the Forks of the Credit railway. The remains of his
construction work bring many visitors to the park annually. The terrain
includes clay and bedrock surfaces with a series of boardwalks and
bridges. Visitors may catch a glimpse of salamanders, turtles, rabbits,
wild turkey, mink, deer, songbirds, brook and brown trout. The
Belfountain trail takes visitors around the pond and along the scenic
right side of the river.
The above information is from http://www.belfountain.ca/nature
Admission to the park is $4.75 for adults and $2.75 for children 6
-12yrs. ABC Peel has rented a BBQ for members to use. We have reserved
picnic area #2 (see park map).

Pre-Recorded Webinar from SENG
"Is it a Gift or a Curse?"
What it means to be an
Outlier... and what to do about it!
presented by Victoria Ragsdell, PhD
Being gifted may mean not fitting in easily with
institutions, conventions or social groupings. It may make it harder to
find friends. It may make it more difficult to be understood or
accepted.
This SENG webinar will look at what it means to be different
from the larger group and explore ways to navigate friends, family,
work and other institutions gracefully, peacefully and effectively.
Taking a page from Dr. Temple Grandin and the book Outliers,
we will explore the promise, the advantages and the navigational
challenges of being somewhat different from the majority population. We
will talk about giftedness as our advantage, our “invisibility
cloak” and our unique perspective on an increasingly homogenized
culture. The goal is to transcend a “victim focus” while viewing
our practical problems and stresses with more sophistication and
precision.

Standardized Assessments: IQ, Achievement, and Aptitude

parents are constantly receiving scores and reports from different
standardized tests. The wide variety of tests used in the school

administrators. This session focuses exclusively on helping parents
understand the different types of standardized tests and what
information they actually provide. Examples are given for intelligence,
nonverbal intelligence, aptitude, and achievement tests. The presenters
address what information is important to look for as well as what such
information actually tells you about your student.

IEP
(Individual Education Plans)
At this time of year ABC Peel gets many calls about Individual
Education Plans (IEPs) so, at this meeting, we will lead a discussion
on their development and how you should be involved.
Ontario Education law (Regulation 181/98) requires an IEP for all
identified students within 30 school days of the “original” IPRC
and within 30 school days of a new school year.
IEPs have many benefits for students and their parents. When done
right, the IEP provides students with customized learning environments,
modifications, and accommodations that connect well with the abilities
and learning potential of your child.
We know that gang of serious-looking people around the IEP planning
table can be intimidating. But the IEP should be developed jointly
between your child’s teacher(s), specialist staff involved with your
child's spec. ed. program, and you, the parent. In fact, parents, as
experts on their children, can provide valuable information and
insights that greatly increase the likelihood of the IEP’s success.
So, come to hear about the features of a good IEP and share your
views and experience with us. However much you know, you will be able
to learn and to contribute to the discussion.
Date: Monday September 27th, 2010

CATHARSIS Night
NOTICE:
Due to last minute scheduling conflicts with some of our panel members,
Catharsis Night is
being
rescheduled to the April 22nd Parent
Night.
In place of the Catharsis panel, we will present the Webinar:
"Accurate
Assessment? Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children and
Adults"
from the National Association of Gifted Children 56th Annual
Convention, held last November in St. Louis, MO.
In this presentation, a pediatrician, two neuropsychologists, two
clinical psychologists, and an educational psychologist discuss the
extent to which gifted children are misdiagnosed as having ADHD, OCD,
Asperger's Disorder, or even Bi-Polar Disorder. Misdiagnoses stem from
a widespread lack of knowledge within the educational, counseling, and
health care professions. Particularly if educationally misplaced,
gifted children may react with inappropriate behaviors, which are
misinterpreted as reflecting emotional problems. Asynchronous
development or developmental anomalies can result in twice-exceptional
children, particularly learning disabilities, that may be similarly
incorrectly diagnosed. This session describes frequent misdiagnoses,
and outlines ways to ascertain the likelihood of a misdiagnosis.
Following the presentation, we will have an open forum
discussion.
Light refreshments will be served.

ABC Peel's Annual 'Bring Your Own Basket' Family Picnic
Join us at Association for Bright Children, Peel chapter's Family
Picnic.
This year our picnic will be held at Belfountain Conservation Area,
located in Caledon, part of the Credit Valley Conservation. For hikers,
a short trail loops around the pond, while the Trimble Trail, a side
trail of the Bruce Trail, stretches 3 km downstream with lookouts on
the Niagara Escarpment.
The above information is from http://www.belfountain.ca/nature/
Admission to the park is $4.25 for adults and $2.25 for children 6
-12yrs. ABC Peel will rent a BBQ for members to use.

Lassaline, an associate professor of aerospace engineering at
Ryerson University in Toronto. Dr. Lassaline will give a presentation
about Ryerson University’s exciting aerospace engineering
program that provides only one of two undergraduate degrees of its
kind in Canada. Many of you may not realize that Canada has the third

available to answer your questions about this program and advise on the
prerequisite courses needed to apply to this amazing program.

your results explained and receive information on the next steps in
advocating for your gifted child. Have you ever wondered how to ask for
testing from your school, or how to ask to have your child placed in a
congregated gifted class? This meeting will help to answer all of those
questions, and show you the process.
Please tell your friends who may have these similar questions to
join us on January 31, 2008. We would like to provide information to
parents who may not be aware of ABC and may not understand the process
of getting a child tested and placed into a contained gifted class.

This year's picnic will be held in the Historic Village of
Inglewood, in Caledon. A branch of the Credit River is next to the
park. There's access for fishing and wading. Hiking and biking can also
be done on the trail.
Historical Background: Inglewood, once known as Sligo
Junction, was a boom town in the late 1870's when the tracks of the
Hamilton and Northwestern Railway and the Credit Valley Railway
converged and crossed over one another at this point, making it a union
station. Eight passenger trains a day and numerous freight trains kept
the station busy. Today, one railway remains, offering train excursions
between Orangeville and Brampton, with a stopover in Inglewood. The
other has been converted into the Caledon Trailway. The Caledon
Trailway connects to the Trans Canada Trail and the Bruce Trail. If you
travel east on the trail from Inglewood you can cross over the newly
erected Caledon Trailway Pedestrian bridge taking you safely over Hwy.
10. If you go west you'll come across the famous Caledon Badlands.
Inglewood is also where the Oak Ridges Moraine butts against the
Niagara Escarpment. The Inglewood Railway Hotel, built in 1877, once
popular with travellers and residents as a place to eat, drink and
socialize, is now the Inglewood General Store. Still a popular place to
eat and socialize, the store has a gift shop, deli, imported grocery
items, an ice cream parlour and, in the summer, an outdoor lunch spot
serving barbequed hamburgers, hotdogs and sausage.
