ABC PEEL CHAPTER - About Us

The Association for Bright Children (ABC) is a registered, non-profit organization interested in the welfare of bright children in our community.

ABC local chapters serve both parents and children by organizing family activities and children's programs, arranging for speakers, and distributing provincial and chapter newsletters. We advise on identification, placement and review process and procedures. We also serve as a support group and information resource for our members and others interested in bright and gifted children.

Local Chapters and Ontario ABC serve as advocates for appropriate programs and services for bright children within the schools, at the Boards and in the Ministry of Education. We have representatives on the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) for both the Dufferin-Peel Separate School Board and the Peel District School Board. Further, our Chapter is represented at the provincial level through Ontario ABC, where we work with the Ministry of Education and Training on behalf of the bright and gifted.

We REPRESENT all gifted students through our positions on the public and separate school boards' Special Education Advisory Committees. At SEAC we review, comment on and make proposals for improvements to the plans and work of special education programs in both Boards.

We ADVOCATE with and for individual families and children in gaining the special education programs that they need and are entitled to under provincial legislation.

We keep PARENTS INFORMED on the choices their children face as they move through the school system.

We help PARENTS TO LEARN about what makes gifted kids tick, and how to (try) to understand them and their needs.

We work with ABC Ontario in advocacy at the Ministry of Education and Training on the needs of the gifted.

Parents' Meetings are generally held on the last Thursday of each month at 7:15 pm in the Inglewood meeting room at the Peel District School Board office on Hurontario Street (see map on the Parents’ Night page). When appropriate, we also invite children to the Parent Meetings. For information about upcoming meetings go to the Current Events page of this web site.

ABC membership is open to all parents, educators, and all those interested in the welfare of bright and gifted children. Children do not have to be formally identified as gifted for their parents to join ABC or attend meetings.

ABC membership is open at throughout the year and runs for 12 months from the date of joining. For information on membership, go to the Membership page of this web site.
